New Club Owner David O’Neill first got involved with Stanley through his video production company submitting match day footage for the Nationwide Conference. O’Neill joined the club full time in late 2007 eventually becoming the club’s General Manager as an unpaid role and donating £100,000 of his own money to the club in 2008.
David O'Neill explained "Whilst we continue with the current fund raising activities I would like to point out and clarify that at no time has Accrington Stanley Football Club and HMRC had any formal agreement in place to pay its outstanding arrears over a twelve month period, and that the previous regime had only reached agreement to be given time to implement a structured payment scheme.
"The club had hoped to be allowed a twelve month period as a realistic timescale to repay the arrears from our annual turnover, by cutting costs and introducing new revenue streams. However this had not been formally agreed, and indeed that is why we are now appealing for assistance in fundraising to raise the money and pay off the full amount due as requested in a much shorter timescale.
"HMRC have asked that we release a club statement on this point as they are receiving many requests for a ‘time to pay’ and we are being quoted as an example. Over the last couple of weeks we have worked very closely with HMRC, and will continue to do so over the next few weeks, keeping them fully informed on our progress and the activities of the Save our Stanley campaign."
